We have all seen it in sci-fi movies: a scientist is frantically working to find a last-minute solution to save the world or a loved one. While stressing out a test tube is accidentally knocked over and lo and behold, at the brink of world destruction, the ultimate solution is found and the day/lover/world is saved.

Science fiction or not, there are plenty of accidental discoveries that turned out to have a dramatic impact, like the discovery of Penicillin by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming in 1928. These accidental discoveries may have shaped history, but usually much more is needed before research leads to actual discoveries and solutions for everyday life.
