A specific user could open experiments normally but, when she selected File > Close, the experiment failed to close and became locked.

Last updated: Aug 24, 2026

In EthoVision XT version 15 where a specific user could open experiments normally but, when she selected File > Close, the experiment failed to close and became locked. After the failed close, she could not reopen the same experiment file. Other users could open the same file without issue, which cleared the lock. The issue occurred for every file she tried to close. The FAQ below provides general troubleshooting steps for experiment locking problems.

FAQ & Step‑by‑Step Instructions

Q: Why does an experiment remain locked for one user after closing?
A: Experiment lock files are created when EthoVision opens an experiment to prevent simultaneous editing. If the user lacks permission to remove the lock file or EthoVision crashes during closing, the lock file may persist. A different user with full permissions can typically remove the lock automatically by opening the experiment.

Q: How can I unlock an experiment file that will not reopen?

Check user permissions – Ensure the affected user has full read/write access to the experiment folder. Without write permissions, EthoVision cannot remove its lock file.

  • Locate and delete the lock file – Navigate to the experiment’s folder in Windows Explorer and look for files with extensions such as .lock, .lck or files named ~experiment.lock. Delete these lock files to clear the lock. Always make a backup of the experiment folder before deleting files.
  • Use another user account – Have another user with working access open and close the experiment file. This often resets and removes the lock file.
  • Upgrade EthoVision – Consider updating from version 15 to a more recent version (e.g., 17.5). Later versions include fixes for file‑locking issues.
  • Avoid network interruptions – If the experiment file is stored on a network drive, make sure the connection is stable. Unstable network connections can lead to orphaned lock files.

Q: How do I properly close an experiment to avoid locking issues?

  • Always save your work before closing, then use File > Close and wait for EthoVision to finish processing. Do not force‑quit the application while an experiment is closing. If possible, close experiments when connected directly to the storage location (not over a remote or wireless connection).

Q: What if the problem persists after clearing the lock file?

  • If the experiment remains locked or the issue recurs, copy the entire experiment folder to a new location and open the copy. You can also contact Noldus support for assistance; providing the experiment folder and a description of the steps you have taken will help them troubleshoot.
