2.1 Install The CatWalk XT Software

If you ordered a new computer from Noldus Information Technology when you purchased CatWalk XT, all the necessary software and hardware is already installed and tested. In that case, you only need to assemble and set up the CatWalk system.

installation package and in a printed version that came with the system. To install the Ethernet card, see Appendix A Install the Ethernet card for the camera on page 164.

Before You Install

Administrator rights

To be able to install the CatWalk software you must have administrator rights, that is, either you are the system administrator or you have been assigned administrator rights. Windows Power Users cannot install CatWalk XT. Do not run CatWalk XT for the first time as an administrator on a computer with multiple user accounts, because other, standard, users then are not able to run CatWalk XT.

Operating systems:

Windows 10 Pro, version 22H2 or later. Please do first a Windows Update to install a compatible Windows 10 version, then install CatWalk XT. See https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro Windows 11 Pro.

Computer

CatWalk XT 10.7 has been tested on a Dell Precision T3660. - Processor: Intel Core i7-11700, 16 MB Cache, 8 Core, 2.5 GHz to 4.9 GHz. - Memory: 16GB DDR5. The RAM minimum requirement for CatWalk XT is 16 GB. - First hard disk: M.2 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD. - Second hard disk: 3,5 inch 1 TB SATA (7200 rpm). - Graphics card: NVIDIA Quadro T1000, 4GB. 2 - Installation

Ethernet network interface

You need a 1-Gb (gigabit) Ethernet network interface card for connecting the digital camera to the CatWalk XT computer. If you purchased the CatWalk XT computer from Noldus, the card is already installed and configured.

Experiments from previous versions of CatWalk XT

If you have old experiments, first back up all your data to a secure location. Experiments are stored by default in the folder: C:\Users\Public(Public) Documents\Noldus\CatWalk XT\ Experiments). Please copy the complete folder of an experiment when transferring it to another folder on the same computer or to another computer.

Install Catwalk Xt

note Make sure you first install CatWalk XT before you connect the Control Unit to the CatWalk XT computer. First install the CatWalk XT software and then connect the hardware key to your computer, not the other way around!

If you upgrade from previous versions

From CatWalk XT 8.x / 9.x - CatWalk XT 10.7 is installed alongside CatWalk 8.x / 9.x. Experiments from CatWalk XT 8.x / 9.x are automatically converted to CatWalk XT 10.7 after opening them, and cannot be opened in the previous CatWalk XT version. From CatWalk XT 10.x - CatWalk XT 10.7 replaces CatWalk XT 10.x. Experiments from CatWalk XT 10.x are automatically converted to CatWalk XT 10.7 when you open them.

Important - before you install CatWalk XT 10.7

If you have CatWalk XT 10.6, we advise you to update the firmware of the Control Unit (Help > Upgrade Control Unit Firmware). See the CatWalk XT 10.6 - Reference Manual. 2 - Installation

Install CatWalk XT

1. Download the CatWalk XT installation files from my.noldus.com.
2. Double-click the file CatWalk XT - Setup - [version number].exe.
3. In the Welcome screen of the CatWalk XT, under Installation type, select Standard.

• optional Choose Custom if you want to install the software on a location other than the default one, or if you want to specify another default location for your experiments (see below) or if you want to specify which shortcuts to add to your desktop. Click Next.

4. Read the End-User License Agreement, select I agree and click Install.
5. Click Close when the message Installation complete appears.

Notes

During the installation of CatWalk XT 10.7, the computer restarts automatically. Please wait until the installation is complete. Installation of the drivers for the Ethernet card is included in this installation. You do not have to take further action.

If installation fails

Try removing the eBUS SDK driver and CatWalk XT 10.6 from the Windows Control Panel. The eBUS SDK driver was installed with CatWalk XT 10.6. Next, install CatWalk XT 10.7 which includes a 64-bit version of the driver (eBUS Runtime 64-bit).

Standard file locations

Installation location: C:\Program Files\Noldus\CatWalk XT 10. Experiments location: C:\Users\Public\Documents\Noldus\CatWalk XT\Experiments.

Uninstall CatWalk XT

To remove CatWalk XT from your computer, do the following: 1. Click the Windows Start button and type "Programs" in the Search field. Choose Add or remove programs. Or open the Control Panel and choose Programs and Features. 2. In the Programs/Apps and Features window, select CatWalk XT 10 and click Uninstall. 2 - Installation

Upgrade Catwalk Xt

Prerequisites

You have a CatWalk XT license and purchased an upgrade. You received an Upgrade Key from Noldus, either on the Welcome letter or by e-mail. If your license is on a USB hardware key, insert that key in a USB port of your CatWalk XT computer.

Procedure

1. Download and install the newest CatWalk XT version from MyNoldus.com. note You do not need to uninstall previous CatWalk XT versions.
2. After installation is complete, start CatWalk XT.
3. In the window that opens, choose Activate software license key.
4. Choose whether to activate online or offline. For details, see page 23.
5. Enter the Upgrade Key that you received from Noldus.

Note

If your license is stored on a hardware key, you need to upgrade the license on that key. Make sure that the hardware key is pugged in the computer and the red LED on the key is on. After starting the newest CatWalk XT version, enter the Upgrade Key.

2.2 Your CatWalk License

Types Of Catwalk Xt License

Your CatWalk XT license is stored on a hardware key (also known as dongle) or in a software form (software license key). In all cases, to know which add-on module you have, choose Help

License on a hardware key

Your CatWalk XT software comes with a hardware key, which determines which functionalities are available. This is a very important piece of equipment, as it is your license and will not be replaced free of charge. Please keep this in mind and make sure that you do not lose the key! You will need to pay for a new license if you do so. The driver for the hardware key is installed automatically when you install CatWalk XT. To make sure that the driver is installed, in the Windows Control Panel open Programs and Features. If the driver is installed, you should see an item named Sentinel Runtime (version 8.11). To reinstall the driver of the hardware key, run the installation of CatWalk XT 10 and select Repair. First install the CatWalk XT software and then connect the hardware key to your computer, not the other way around! Your CatWalk XT software can only acquire data if the hardware key is plugged in your computer. If the hardware key is not plugged in, you can open existing experiments, analyze data and classify runs. In order to use the full functionality of CatWalk XT on two computers, you must move the hardware key from one computer to the other. If the hardware key is not plugged in your PC or the software license is not activated, you can still start CatWalk XT and work in unlicensed analysis mode. This means that you can analyze and visualize previously-recorded data, but cannot acquire more data. See catwalk xt in analysis mode on page 30. 2 - Installation

Upgrade the hardware key

When you upgrade from a previous version and start CatWalk XT for the first time, the system automatically detects the hardware key and asks you to type the Upgrade Key in the Upgrade Key window box. This number is normally sent to you by e-mail or in your welcome letter. See also upgrade catwalk xt on page 19.

Software license key

A software license key allows you to use CatWalk XT without a hardware key plugged in your computer. important Your software license key is coupled to the hardware of your computer; not to a specific user or user group name. A software license can be of two types: Fixed. This type of license is meant to be used on a specific computer. The fixed license is associated with that computer. This association is registered on the Noldus Server. In order to re-use a fixed license on another computer, you must first deactivate that license on the computer where it is currently active. See deactivate a catwalk xt license on page 26. Floating. This type of license is meant for when you want to use CatWalk XT to acquire runs on two or more computers (though not simultaneously). 2 - Installation - If you acquire runs on the same computer in the lab and you want to analyze/visualize data on your computer in the office, a floating license is not needed. You can activate a fixed license on your lab's computer to acquire the data, while using CatWalk XT in unlicensed analysis mode in your office (see page 30). - With one floating license you can work on one computer at a time. Make sure that CatWalk XT is closed on the computers other than the one you are using at that time. - important In order to work with a floating license, your CatWalk XT computer must be connected to the internet. When you close CatWalk XT on one computer with a floating license, the license is automatically deactivated, at the condition that the computer is connected to the Noldus Server. At that point you can use CatWalk XT on another computer.

Activate Your Catwalk Xt License

Aim

To activate a CatWalk XT license after purchase. Note that you do not need to follow this procedure if your license is on a USB hardware key.

Background information

When you start CatWalk XT, the software checks that your license is valid. The license may be stored in your hardware key (dongle), in your CatWalk XT computer (Fixed license) or in the Noldus server (Floating license). See types of catwalk xt license on page 19. If no valid license is found, you can activate your license by following the procedure below.

Important terms

Activation key. An activation key is provided by Noldus to activate your license. You find an activation key on a letter or e-mail sent to you. Computer key. A Computer key comes into play when you activate your license offline (see below), This is a key that identifies the computer that you are using during activation. License key. A license key is the unique piece of information that you obtain after you activate the license. You can find this key in CatWalk XT, by choosing Help > About CatWalk XT > License Info.

Prerequisites

You have installed CatWalk XT (page 17). 2 - Installation You have received a License Activation Key from Noldus.

What do you want to do?

Activate a fixed license (below). Do this when you want to work with CatWalk XT on one computer only. Activate a floating license (page 25). Do so if you plan to use this license on different computers at different times. If you have two or more floating licenses instead of one, you can use CatWalk XT on multiple computers simultaneously.

Activate a fixed license

1. Start CatWalk XT. In the window that appears, choose Activate software license key.
2. Choose Fixed - On this computer only and click OK.
3. Enter or copy the Activation Key that you received from Noldus.
4. Select one of the options depending if your CatWalk XT computer is connected to the internet.

• Activate Online. Do so if your computer is connected to the internet. Next, click OK. A message appears that the license has been activated.
• Activate Offline. If your computer is not connected to the internet, you need a smartphone connected to the internet, which can scan a QR-code. 2 - Installation note The Activate Offline option is not available if you have purchased a time-limited license or received a license for a free trial. See duration of the catwalk xt license page 29 a. To obtain the Computer Key, scan the QR code with a smartphone. b. If the QR code is recognized, a web page of the Noldus License Manager opens that shows the required Computer Key (see below). c. Enter this key in the Computer Key field in the CatWalk XT License activation window and click OK.

Activate a floating license

Choose a floating license if you want to use CatWalk XT on different computers (though not simultaneously). With two or more floating licenses, you can work with CatWalk XT on different computers (and CatWalk XT systems) simultaneously. important You can only activate and use a floating license when your CatWalk XT computers are connected to the internet. So make sure that your CatWalk XT computer in the lab is always connected. 2 - Installation 1. Start CatWalk XT on one of the computers. In the window that appears, choose Activate software license key. 2. Choose Floating - On multiple computers and click OK. 3. Under Activate floating license, enter or copy the Activation Key that you received from Noldus. Next, click OK. 4. The license is activated. You can start using CatWalk XT. 5. Repeat the procedure on the other computers.

Notes

You cannot activate a term license after the expiration date. If activation fails: - Try once again and make sure that you enter the correct Activation Key and Computer Key, including capital letters and dashes. - Contact Noldus to obtain a valid Activation Key. If your license is not activated, you can still start CatWalk XT and work in unlicensed analysis mode (see page 30).

Deactivate A Catwalk Xt License

Aim

To deactivate a software license, either to end the license agreement or to transfer the license to another computer. 2 - Installation example You have purchased a new computer and you would like to transfer your CatWalk XT license from the old to the new computer.

Prerequisites

CatWalk XT is running with a software license (no hardware key). The CatWalk XT computer is connected to the internet, or you have a smartphone connected to the internet.

What do you want to do?

Deactivate a fixed license (see below). Deactivate a floating license (see page 28). See types of catwalk xt license on page 28.

Deactivate a fixed license

1. In CatWalk XT, choose Help > Deactivate License.
2. Choose Fixed - On this computer only and click OK.
3. Select one of the options depending if your CatWalk XT computer is connected to the internet.

• Deactivate online. Do this if your CatWalk XT computer is connected to the internet. Select this option and click OK.
• Deactivate offline. If your computer is not connected to the internet, you need a smartphone connected to the internet, which can scan a QR-code. a. Select this option, and click OK. b. A QR code appears on the screen. c. Scan this code using a smartphone and follow the link within 24 hours. d. Click Deactivate on the screen that appears in your browser.

4. CatWalk XT shows a message that the license has been deactivated and closes. Note: If your smartphone is not connected to the internet, leave the link open, go to a place where your smartphone is connected to the internet and open the linked page. When you click Deactivate offline, your license is deactivated on your computer, but not yet on the Noldus Server. For this second step you must scan the QR code, follow the associated link and click Deactivate on a web browser of your smartphone. Do this within 24 hours. 2 - Installation

Deactivate a floating license

Deactivate a floating license when you need to transfer that license to another computer. Note that, when you have floating licenses, in order to be able to work on one computer you just need to close CatWalk XT on the other computer(s). You do not need to deactivate the license on the other computer(s). 1. Make sure that the CatWalk XT computer is connected to the internet. 2. In CatWalk XT, choose Help > Deactivate License. 3. A message appears: License successfully deactivated. CatWalk XT will close now. 4. You can now activate that floating license on another computer. See activate your catwalk xt license on page 23 and choose to activate a floating license.

Turn A Floating License To A Fixed License

Aim

You may want to turn a floating license to a fixed license so you can use CatWalk XT on a computer without internet connection.

Prerequisites

You have a CatWalk XT floating license. You have an Activation Key for your floating license.

Procedure

1. Open CatWalk XT and deactivate the floating license. Here you need an internet connection. See Deactivate a floating license on page 28.
2. After deactivation of the license, CatWalk XT closes.
3. Start CatWalk XT on the computer where you want to have the fixed license.
4. Choose Activate software license key, then Fixed - On this computer only. Follow the instructions under Activate a fixed license on page 24.

Turn A Fixed License To A Floating License

Aim

You may want to turn a fixed license to a floating license because you want to use CatWalk XT on multiple computers (not simultaneously). note If you purchased multiple floating licenses, you can work on multiple computers simultaneously, because a license will be active in each computer.

Prerequisites

You have a CatWalk XT fixed license. You need to have the Activation Key for your floating license.

Procedure

1. Open CatWalk XT and deactivate the fixed license. See Deactivate a fixed license on page 27.
2. After deactivation of the license, CatWalk XT closes.
3. Start CatWalk XT on the computer where you want to activate the floating license. Here you need an internet connection.
4. Choose Activate software license key, then Floating - On multiple computers. Follow the instructions under Activate a floating license on page 25. note If you choose to deactivate offline, first click OK, then scan the QR code that appears. Follow the link and click/tap Deactivate.

Duration Of The Catwalk Xt License

An CatWalk XT license can be:

Perpetual license

This is the most common license. You purchase a copy of CatWalk XT on a one-time basis and can use the software forever.

Time-limited license

This license is generally valid for a period of six or twelve months. 2 - Installation A time-limited license can only be activated online. See activate your catwalk xt license on page 23.

Catwalk Xt In Analysis Mode

Aim

To carry out analysis and visualization of already-existing track data in CatWalk XT without a license.

Background information

An CatWalk XT license is needed whenever you acquire new data and record video. So it is important to activate a license on the computer that you use to collect data. However, you can also install the CatWalk XT software on other computers without a license. example After collecting gait data in your lab with a CatWalk XT license, copy the CatWalk XT experiment to your laptop where you have installed CatWalk XT without a license. There you can visualize and analyze your data.

Procedure

1. If you have not done so yet, install CatWalk XT (see page 17)
2. Start CatWalk XT.
3. If CatWalk XT does not find a valid license, a window opens with the message No License key found.
4. Choose Start in unlicensed analysis mode.

What you can do with CatWalk XT in analysis mode

CatWalk XT in unlicensed analysis mode offers all the functions necessary to refine analysis and produce results. Open existing experiments. Edit the values of independent variables in the Trial List. Classify runs and adjust the Classification Settings. Create new Data profiles and select data. 2 - Installation Create new Parameter profiles and select parameters. Use all the analysis functions under the Analyze menu. Export videos, visualizations, run data, all statistics and charts. Make a backup of your experiment and restore experiments from backup files.
