Cardiology
Aim
In DanioScope, Cardiology analyzes video images of one or more subjects and estimates the heart beat rate.
To Open the Cardiology Screen
Choose Acquisition > Cardiology.
Main Steps
- Load the video files and draw the heart areas.
- Acquire cardiology data.

Draw the Heart Areas
To Load Video Files
- Click the Add Video(s) button.
- Select one or more video files, and click Open. To select multiple files, hold the Ctrl key down and click each file name.
- The list of loaded video files appears. The video window shows the first video in the list.
Tip: To select and open another video for preview, select the corresponding check box.
To Draw the Heart Areas
- Select one of the video files in the list.
- Using the playback controls, position the video to the first frame, or, if the first part of the video is not interesting, to the point where you want to start measurements. An interval of 10 to 15 seconds is usually enough to accurately measure heart rate.
- Click one of the drawing tools, and draw a shape around the heart of the first subject in the image.
- Assign the shape to an existing subject or select Add Subjects.
- If you selected Draw template shapes for all subjects in the Add Subjects window, all shapes are copied at the top of the video window. Move each shape to the corresponding heart.
- Click a shape and drag its handles to resize and adapt it to the hearts. Play the video for a clear view of the heart movements. The shapes do not need to have exactly the same area.
- Click the > button above the video window and repeat the procedure for the next video file.
The Status column tells you which step is next for each video file.
Notes
- For Cardiology, the measurement of heart rate is based on the frequency of the peaks in Activity (%) in the heart area, not on the absolute values of Activity (%), which are affected by the size and shape of the heart area. This means that, if you are interested in heart rate only, the heart areas do not need to have exactly the same size. However, if you are interested in the absolute values of Activity (%) to compare different individuals, draw the areas in such a way that it only includes the heart.
Next Steps
- The video is analyzed up to its end. If a subject changes position significantly throughout the video, you must specify the stop time for the measurement (see To Set a Stop Time for a Measurement). Optionally, specify the new location as a new measurement (see Add a Measurement).
Acquire Cardiology Data
To Acquire Cardiology Data
- Make sure that all heart areas are in the correct place.
- To acquire data for the current video, click the Acquire button. To acquire data for all videos where subjects have been defined, click Acquire All. At the end of acquisition the Status column in the video list says Acquired.
Notes
- If you resize a shape after acquisition, the cardiology statistics for that measurement are cleared and the Status column says Next: Acquire. Click Acquire to acquire the data.
- Cardiology data are essentially pixel activity data, measured for the heart area only, not the whole embryo.

Cardiology Statistics
In the list below the video window you find the cardiology statistics per subject and measurement: BPS (beats per second) and BPM (beats per minute).
If values of BPS are very low, they may result from artifacts in the video image (for example flickering). Make sure that your video does not contain such artifacts.
Note
The video frame corresponding to the Stop time is not analyzed. Video is analyzed from Start to Stop (included).
