EthoVision XT 18 - GigE Install and Setup - Ethovision Xt:

Last updated: Jul 30, 2026

EthoVision XT Troubleshooting

  1. In EthoVision XT via Experiment Settings, I cannot select Basler GenICam [Basler acA1300-60] (camera and network card are setup 100% correctly per this document).

    • Camera drivers installed per Section D? And IP addresses assigned per Sections C and Section G?
    • Disable firewall and/or anti-virus software.
    • Network card defective.
  2. In EthoVision XT via Experiment Settings, I can select my cameras but error message Device Unplugged appears.

    • Check cable connection between cameras and PC.
    • Check that camera is receiving power.
    • Merged Video Resolution too high?
      • 8 cameras → 2560 x 960
      • 16 cameras → 2560 x 1920
    • Network card issues.
  3. In EthoVision XT via Experiment Settings, I cannot see an image from the camera when I click on the Camera icon.

    • Make sure that the camera(s) is connected to PC and powered PRIOR to opening EthoVision.
    • Make sure that the aperture of the lens is fully open (lens ring all the way to Open or O).
    • Make sure that Pylon is closed.
    • Make sure the correct camera is selected in Experiment Settings, that camera being: Basler GenICam [Basler acA1300-60].
    • PC is running Windows 10 or 11 but you have Windows 7 driver installed (4.2.1). Download and install driver 7.5.0 per Section D (will need to reset-up camera again, follow Section H again in its entirety).
    • Make sure network IP/Subnet and camera IP/Subnet match (can check/change camera subnet via Pylon).
  4. In EthoVision XT via Experiment Settings, when I set the Resolution to something in the range of 1280x960, the highest Frame Rate I can select is ~7.5 frames per second. Why can't I select 30 fps or 25 fps?

    • Check that your Exposure setting isn't too high.
    • If Exposure setting is ok, confirm that the Power Injector is in fact a 1GB Power Injector.
    • If Exposure setting is ok, confirm that the Network card is in fact a 1GB network card.
    • If network card is 1GB, check that it is set to Auto-negotiate. If it is, then the network card either needs a driver update or is defective.
    • Cheap, incorrect, or defective Ethernet cables can also reduce the frame rate.
    • PC insufficient, for example only has an onboard video card. Send Support a PC report, see Section P. Also see Section O.
  5. In EthoVision XT via the Experiment Settings when I click on the Camera icon, the Video Settings box says "No frames available".

    • Video Card (GPU) driver is missing or very old. Install/update GPU.
    • If you are using Windows 10, make sure you are using Pylon 6.2.0 or higher. The driver linked in this document is version 7.5.0 for use with EthoVision XT 18. If you installed from an older CD, you could have installed an older Pylon driver (4.2.1) which doesn't support Windows 10.
    • Settings in Pylon Viewer changed? Specifically, support has seen this with the Trigger mode setting (in Pylon Viewer under Acquisition Controls). It should be set to Off.
    • Other causes are possible, such as installing Windows 10 on an older PC which isn't compatible with Windows 10.
    • If none of these examples fit your situation, contact [email protected] for further assistance. Please also send a PC report with your update. See Section P.
  6. In EthoVision via the Experiment Settings when I click on the Camera icon, the Video Settings box says "No video frames".

    • Confirm that the PC monitor is plugged into the stand-alone video card (GPU) and NOT the motherboard.
    • Disable firewall and/or virus scanner to see if they are interfering.
  7. The camera image in EthoVision is off-center, rather than showing the area directly in front of the camera.

This occurs if you have selected a lower resolution in EthoVision's Experiment Settings, and the Center X and Center Y options are not checked in the camera settings. Increasing the resolution to the maximum value will give you the full field of view of the camera (and it will be centered). If you prefer a lower resolution, refer to the relevant documentation section.

  8. The camera image in EthoVision XT is too narrow to display the entire arena.

    • The field of view will be reduced if you have selected a lower resolution in EthoVision's Experiment Settings. Rather than scaling the entire image down to the lower resolution, this camera will display a limited "area of interest" in order to maintain full image quality. For the widest possible view, increase the resolution to the maximum value (typically 1280x1024).
    • If you have a varifocal lens (most systems do), you can also adjust the zoom setting on the lens. Note that adjusting the zoom will also change the focus, so you will need to adjust the focus as well in order to see the actual effect. You may also need to loosen the lock screw on the side of the lens before the zoom setting can be adjusted.
  9. Image is ok in Experiment Settings, but a white background image appears in Arena Settings.

    • The Resolution set in Experiment Settings is either too high or an odd resolution is selected (such as 640x426). Reduce the resolution and/or select a standard resolution (such as 640x480).
    • Similar results are possible if no drivers have been installed for the computer's graphics adapter.
  10. In EthoVision XT: I can select the first camera fine but when I select my second GigE camera in Experiment Settings, EthoVision crashes.

    • Select a standard resolution like 640x480. Avoid resolutions like 640x426.
    • Maximum resolution supported is 1900x1200 (Deep Learning: 1280x960 or 1280x1024).
    • 4K is not supported, live or from pre-recorded video.
  11. Image in EthoVision XT flickers or stutters.

    • The underlying issue is that fluorescent and LED lighting in the US cycles at 60 Hz, which does not align with a frame rate of 25. Use a frame rate of 30. Sometimes this is enough to resolve the issue.
    • The Exposure setting in Pylon Viewer is incorrect (Exposure Time (Abs) [us] is likely too low). Try a value in the 4000–8000 range. If lighting is low in the room, use a higher exposure value.
