Cleaning the CatWalk glass walkway
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
Users are unsure how to safely clean the CatWalk glass plate between runs and between animals, including which cleaning agents are approved and whether bleach or other disinfectants can be used.
Details
Applies to all CatWalk XT hardware versions. Incorrect cleaning agents (e.g., bleach) can damage the glass surface or affect light transmission, impacting paw print detection.
Solution
Between runs / between animals:
1. Lift the corridor walls and remove droppings, urine, and debris with a soft cloth or tissue.
2. Clean the glass surface using one of the following approved agents:
- Commercial glass-cleaning fluid
- Water with a small amount of vinegar
- 70% alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol) solution
3. Do NOT use bleach or other harsh disinfectants – these are not listed as approved agents and may damage the glass.
4. After cleaning, allow the glass to dry and then click 'Snap Background' in CatWalk XT before starting the next run to update the background reference image.
Routine disinfection:
- 70% alcohol solution is appropriate for routine disinfection between animals.
- Wipe dry before the next trial.
