Split paw classification – two boxes with the same label on one paw
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
After auto-classification, some paw placements appear as two separate detection boxes with the same paw label (e.g., two boxes both labeled 'RF'), creating confusion about whether the classification is correct.
Details
Occurs in CatWalk XT 11 (and earlier versions) when the toes and pad of a single paw contact are detected as separate prints. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a classification error.
Solution
1. Understand that a single paw placement can legitimately be detected as more than one print (e.g., toes and pad appearing separately). CatWalk XT treats all boxes sharing the same correct label as one combined paw print for statistical calculations – area, intensity, and timing are aggregated correctly.
2. Verify that each box carries the correct paw label (LF, RF, LH, RH). If a label is wrong, correct it using the manual classification tools.
3. Do not delete or merge the boxes if the labels are correct – the software handles the aggregation automatically.
4. If the split is undesirable, slightly increase the Green Intensity Threshold to merge dim secondary prints into the main contact area, then re-run auto-classification.
