EthoVision Crash or Freeze During Raw Data Export – Using Data Profile to Limit Export Size
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
EthoVision crashes or closes unexpectedly when attempting to export raw data, particularly for large datasets. The crash occurs repeatedly across multiple export attempts.
Details
The software closes without warning during the export process. This is distinct from the 'Large Raw Data Export Failures or Performance Issues for Long / High-Density Recordings' article in that the trigger here is the total number of trials being exported at once rather than the density or duration of individual recordings. Reported in EthoVision XT; most likely to affect experiments with a large number of trials or long recordings being exported in a single batch.
Solution
1. Instead of exporting all trials at once, use a Data Profile to limit the number of trials included in each export batch.
2. In EthoVision, go to the Analysis module and open or create a Data Profile.
3. Use the trial selection/filter options within the Data Profile to select a subset of trials (e.g., 20–30 at a time) rather than the full experiment.
4. Export this subset, then repeat the process for the next batch of trials.
5. Combine the resulting export files in Excel or your analysis software as needed.
6. If crashes persist even with smaller batches, check available disk space and system RAM, and close other applications before exporting.
