EthoVision Error 10061 When Restoring Backup – Network Path or Permissions Issue
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
User receives EthoVision error code 10061 when attempting to restore an EthoVision backup (.evz) file. The restore process fails and the experiment cannot be opened.
Details
Error 10061 typically indicates that EthoVision is unable to write the restored files to the target location. Common causes include: restoring from or to a network share (UNC path starting with \\), insufficient write permissions on the destination folder, or a restricted/read-only directory. EthoVision requires local disk write access to perform the restore operation. Affects all EthoVision XT versions.
Solution
1. Check the path of the backup file — if it is on a network share (path beginning with \\ or a mapped network drive), copy the .evz file to a local folder on the PC (e.g., C:\Users\YourName\Documents\EthoVision Backups) before attempting to restore.
2. Also confirm that the destination restore folder is on a local drive with full write permissions for your Windows user account.
3. In EthoVision XT, go to File > Restore Backup and browse to the locally copied .evz file.
4. When prompted, choose a local destination folder for the restored experiment.
5. If the error persists, right-click the destination folder in Windows Explorer, go to Properties > Security, and confirm your user account has Full Control.
6. If EthoVision is running under a restricted account, try running it as Administrator (right-click the EthoVision shortcut > Run as administrator) and repeat the restore.
