EthoVision Export to Excel – Data on First Sheet Not Editable Until Another Sheet Is Selected
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
After exporting EthoVision analysis data to Excel, the first sheet appears selected but is unresponsive: data cannot be copied, pasted, or graphed. All standard Excel menu options are greyed out or unavailable.
Details
The issue occurs when opening the exported Excel file directly from EthoVision. The first sheet is active by default but behaves as though it is in a protected or locked state. Affected operations include copy/paste, chart creation, and other standard spreadsheet actions. The problem resolves automatically when the user clicks to a different sheet and then returns to sheet 1, after which all options become available. Reported in EthoVision XT (newer version); likely an Excel rendering/activation quirk triggered by how EthoVision generates the multi-sheet export file.
Solution
1. Open the exported Excel file as normal.
2. If the first sheet appears unresponsive (cannot copy, paste, or graph data), do not close the file.
3. Click any other sheet tab at the bottom of the Excel workbook.
4. Click back on the first sheet (Sheet 1 / the data sheet you need).
5. All menu options should now be active and data should be fully editable and graphable.
6. This is a workaround for a rendering quirk in how Excel activates the first sheet in EthoVision-generated exports. No data is lost or corrupted.
7. If the issue persists across multiple exports, try opening the file, pressing Ctrl+A to select all, and then switching sheets and back as above.
