Faulty or Undetected Capture Card – Hardware Replacement Required
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A video capture card installed in the PC is not recognized by Windows Device Manager, and multiple driver versions fail to resolve the issue, preventing EthoVision from detecting the connected camera.
Details
When a capture card is physically faulty or incompatible, it will not appear in Device Manager regardless of driver installation attempts. This is distinct from driver or software configuration issues. The camera connected via the faulty card will also not be detectable in EthoVision. In some cases, power supply issues can also prevent cameras from being detected.
Solution
1. Open Windows Device Manager and check whether the capture card appears under any category (including 'Unknown devices' or with a warning icon).
2. If the card is completely absent from Device Manager after trying multiple drivers and reseating the card, the card is likely physically faulty.
3. Test the card in a different PCIe slot if available, or test a known-good card in the same slot to determine whether the slot or card is at fault.
4. If confirmed faulty, replace the capture card with a compatible model. Contact your supplier or Noldus for a replacement.
5. For camera detection issues caused by power supply problems (e.g., camera not powering on), try replacing the power supply unit or PoE injector supplying the camera.
6. After replacing hardware, reinstall the appropriate drivers and verify the camera appears in EthoVision.
