MP4 Video Shows White or Blank Screen in EthoVision Arena Settings – Codec Compatibility

Last updated: Nov 01, 2026

Problem

When loading an MP4 video file into EthoVision Arena Settings, the video preview displays a white or blank screen instead of the video content, preventing background grabbing and arena setup.

Details

MP4 is a container format that supports many different codecs. EthoVision supports MP4 files encoded with the H.264 (MPEG-4/AVC) codec. Files encoded with other codecs (e.g., H.265/HEVC, MPEG-4 Part 2, or proprietary surveillance camera codecs) may display as white, blank, or fail to load. This is commonly reported with videos from IP cameras or surveillance systems (e.g., Synology Surveillance Station). Affected versions: EthoVision XT 18 and 19.

Solution

1. Verify the codec of your MP4 file using a tool like MediaInfo (free download) — look for the 'Format' field under the video track.
2. If the codec is not H.264 (AVC), convert the file to H.264 MP4 using a video conversion tool such as HandBrake (free) or FFmpeg.
- In HandBrake: load the file, set the output format to MP4 and the video codec to H.264, then encode.
3. After conversion, reload the H.264 MP4 file in EthoVision Arena Settings — the video should now display correctly.
4. For future recordings, configure your camera or surveillance system to output H.264 MP4 files directly if possible.
5. If playback issues persist after conversion, also verify that no third-party video decoders installed on the PC are intercepting playback (see the article on EthoVision Error 10075 for guidance on decoder conflicts).
