DanioScope — Measuring Blood Flow / Blood Pressure in Larval Zebrafish
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
Users are unsure how to use DanioScope to measure blood pressure or blood flow activity in larval zebrafish (danio rerio).
Details
DanioScope includes a Flow acquisition module for analyzing cardiovascular activity in zebrafish larvae by measuring temporal pixel changes within a selected blood vessel region. This is a workflow question applicable to all DanioScope versions with the Flow module.
Solution
1. Open DanioScope and navigate to **Acquisition > Flow**.
2. Add your video files containing the zebrafish larvae.
3. Select a video and use the **drawing tool** to outline the blood vessel of interest, fitting the shape as precisely as possible inside the vessel walls.
4. Assign the measurement region to the corresponding subject.
5. DanioScope will analyze temporal changes frame by frame and output the **mean percentage of activity (flow)** for the selected vessel region.
6. Review the output data for each subject. Higher variability in pixel intensity over time corresponds to active blood flow.
Note: Ensure good video quality and sufficient contrast between the blood vessel and surrounding tissue for accurate detection.
