FaceReader — Ensuring Consistent Baseline Calibration Across Participants

Last updated: Nov 01, 2026

Problem

Users are unsure how to ensure that baseline reference standards are consistent across all participants when performing facial expression analysis in FaceReader, leading to incomparable data between subjects.

Details

This is a common workflow question in FaceReader. Without a consistent calibration approach, individual differences in resting facial muscle tone can skew action unit and emotion output data, making cross-subject comparisons unreliable. Affects all FaceReader versions supporting calibration.

Solution

To ensure consistent baseline reference standards for all participants in FaceReader:

1. **Use a neutral expression for calibration:** For each participant, create a calibration clip using images or video frames in which the subject displays a neutral (resting) expression. This corrects for individual expression biases.
2. **Select the same face model for all subjects:** Apply the same face model consistently across participants to avoid model-induced variability.
3. **Capture calibration under identical conditions:** Record or select calibration frames under the same lighting, camera angle, and distance used for the actual experiment.
4. **Apply calibration before analysis:** Ensure the calibration is assigned to the correct participant profile before running the analysis.
5. **Review calibration quality:** Check that FaceReader has successfully detected and fitted the face model during calibration before proceeding.
6. **Document your calibration protocol:** Standardize and record the procedure so it can be replicated across sessions and operators.
