How to setup Deep Learning in EthoVision XT 18?

Last updated: Aug 24, 2026

Resolution – Deep Learning isn’t a standalone module; it becomes available only when three‑point tracking is selected and, for live tracking, only when the experiment contains fewer than two arenas or subjects. The customer was advised to adjust experiment settings accordingly.

FAQ and Detailed Instructions:

Why can’t I use the Deep Learning option in EthoVision XT?

  • Deep Learning doesn’t appear as a separate module. It is available only when you configure your experiment to use three‑point tracking and, for live tracking, when there are less than two arenas and no more than two subjects per arena.

What is three‑point tracking and why is it required?

  • Three‑point tracking refers to tracking the animal’s body as three separate points (e.g., nose-point, center, and tail-base). The Deep Learning algorithm relies on this tracking mode for accurate body-point recognition.

Enabling Deep Learning in your experiment:

  • Open your experiment in EthoVision XT and go to the Experiment Settings.
  • Select three‑point tracking – Choose the tracking method that uses three points on the subject’s body.
  • Confirm the number of arenas – For live tracking, Deep Learning is only available when up to four arenas are configured and either one or two subjects per Arena.
  • Update the software – Ensure you have a recent version (v18 or later).
  • Verify hardware – Make sure you have a compatible NVIDIA GPU with up‑to‑date drivers.
  • Restart and test – After adjusting settings, restart the software and confirm the Deep Learning method appears.

Can Deep Learning be used when live tracking in more than one arena?

  • Yes. EthoVision XT supports the Deep Learning algorithm in up to four arenas when live tracking.

Can Deep Learning be used when live tracking more than one subject (Social Interaction Module required)?

  • Yes. EthoVision XT supports the Deep Learning algorithm for live tracking when only two subjects are tracked in the same arena, in up to 4 arenas.

What if I still cannot enable Deep Learning after following these steps?

  • - Confirm three‑point tracking is selected.
  • - Ensure your EthoVision license is active (USB license key or software-based license key).
  • - Restart EthoVision XT after changing settings.
  • - Check GPU drivers and hardware compatibility.
  • - If the option is still missing, contact [email protected] with your software version, hardware details and experiment configuration.
