Installation and Activation

Requirements

Network

A dedicated local network of at least 1 Gb/s is needed for Viso, its components and cameras. If Noldus IT installed the system, all computers will have an Intel Pro/1000 CT or Intel Pro/1000 PT (1 Gb) network adapter. Cameras and computers should be connected to a 1 Gb POE or POE+ switch. All computers and devices must have a fixed IP address. We recommend Cat 6 cables; Cat 5e cables are the minimum.

Operating System and Web Browser

Viso supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 64-bit Professional edition. It has been thoroughly tested with the Windows 10 and Windows 11 U.S. English language pack. It has also been tested with Cyrillic, Japanese and Chinese language packs. It is possible that certain local language versions of Windows may affect how well the program runs. Viso is not designed for use with the Windows Touch features.

The Viso web application has been tested with the following web browsers:

  • Windows 11 (version 22H2) and Windows 10 (version 1809) - Chrome (71.0.3578.98) and Firefox (64.0)
  • macOS Mojave 10.14 - Safari (12.0.2) and Chrome (71.0.3578.98)
  • iOS 12 - Safari (12.0) and Chrome (71.0.3578.98)
  • Android 8.1 and 9 - Chrome (71.0.3578.98)

A limited test was done with Edge (44.17763.1.0) on Windows 10 (version 1809) and Chrome (71.0.3578.99) on Android 7.1.1.

Computers

Viso has been tested in a stationary and a portable set-up. If you order a complete solution from Noldus Information Technology, you will obtain workstations or a notebook with the Viso software installed and ready to use. If you want to purchase your own computers, make sure they have the following minimum/recommended specifications.

  • Network load: 1 Mbps per one 1920x1080 full HD H.264 video recorded or played (minimum); 6 Mbps per one 1920x1080 full HD H.264 video recorded or played (recommended)

Portable Set-Up

Viso has been tested in a standalone portable set-up with Viso Services, Viso Recorder and Viso Viewer installed on one notebook (Dell Precision 3530).

  • Processor: Intel Core i7 (6-core), 2.2 GHz or better
  • Internal memory: 8 GB or more
  • Hard disk: 1 TB (minimum)
  • Graphics card: 4 GB NVIDIA Quadro P600 or better (minimum specification; a T550 graphics card is recommended)

To properly utilize the GPU hardware acceleration, only NVIDIA cards are recommended.

The following scenarios have been tested (resolution: 1920x1080, frame rate: 25 fps, line-in/RTSP/Dante audio, single sessions, test duration: 2 hours):

  • 4x Axis M1075
  • 4x Axis M5525-E
  • 2x Axis M1075 + 2x Axis M5525-E
  • 2x Axis M1075 + 1x Axis M5525-E + 1x Epiphan Pearl Nano

The following scenarios have been tested (cameras used at full HD resolution, frame rate: 25 fps, test duration: 1 hour):

  • 1 room, 2x Axis M1075, separate session, line-in audio
  • 1 room, 2x Axis 1375, separate session, line-in audio
  • 1 room, Epiphan Pearl Nano + Axis 1375, separate session, line-in audio
  • 1 room, 2x Axis M1075, separate session, RTSP audio
  • 1 room, 2x Axis 1375, separate session, RTSP audio
  • 1 room, Epiphan Pearl Nano + Axis 1375, separate session, RTSP audio

Cameras

Viso is designed for use with IP cameras that:

  • Support RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) communication, which is a protocol to stream video and audio data over a network.
  • Produce H.264 video streams.
  • Optionally, support ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) Profile S. ONVIF is a communication standard for network devices. ONVIF ensures compatibility of devices, regardless of the manufacturer. ONVIF Profile S applies to video and audio streaming and PTZ control.

With Viso, ONVIF makes the following possible:

  • Pan, tilt, and zoom (PTZ) control, if the camera has PTZ.
  • Record audio of IP cameras or microphones connected to the cameras.

Power over Ethernet Switch

The cameras can be connected to a 1 Gb POE (Power Over Ethernet) or POE+ switch to supply them with power. This way no extra power cables are needed. Each device is connected to one channel on the switch. A POE switch can deliver up to 15 Watt per channel. A POE+ switch has a higher capacity per channel (up to 30 Watt per channel). Make sure that the maximum total capacity of the switch is high enough for all cameras together.

Example: if you connect four cameras that need 30 Watt each to a POE+ switch, the switch must deliver at least 4 x 30 = 120 Watt.

The following devices require a PoE switch:

  • Axis M1054 IP camera
  • Axis M1075 IP camera
  • Axis P5514 IP camera
  • Axis P5515 PTZ IP camera
  • Epiphan Pearl Nano broadcaster
  • Epiphan VGADVI Broadcaster

The following device requires a PoE+ switch:

  • Hikvision IP DS-2PT7D20IW-DE

Other Hardware

Viso supports the CH Products RS Desktop joystick for Pan, Tilt, Zoom control of IP cameras.

Number of Computers Needed

Viso systems with more than four locations require extra computers with Viso Recorder. The total number of Viso Recorders and Viso instances you can run simultaneously depends on your license.

In a small setup, all Viso components can in principle run on the same computer; however, the software may then become very slow. We recommend running Viso Viewer on a different computer than Viso Recorder and Viso Services.

Supported Recording Time

The maximum supported recording time is two hours.

Remote Access

The computer(s) with Viso Services and Viso Recorder can be accessed from other computers. We recommend doing so instead of connecting a monitor and keyboard directly to these computers. This way the settings of Viso Services and Viso Recorder cannot be altered easily by unauthorized persons. Use the Remote Desktop program that is installed with Windows.

Multi-site deployment?

We offer volume licensing and centralized management for labs with multiple locations.

Noldus is here to assist you throughout the whole process.
