Last updated: Jul 28, 2026

Upgrading from Viso 10.7

Aim: To upgrade from Viso 10.7 to Viso 12. The Viso database is backed up automatically.

Prerequisite: You have Viso 10.7 (or newer) and are eligible to upgrade to version 12.

  1. Close all running Viso applications. Exit all running Viso Recorder Managers.
  2. Shut down RabbitMQ on the computer with Viso Services using Task Manager > Services, by right-clicking RabbitMQ and selecting Stop.
  3. Uninstall N-Linx Server: open the Control Panel, select Programs and Features, select N-Linx Server in the list of programs, and click Uninstall.
  4. Repeat step 3 for Erlang.
  5. Remove the hardware key from the computer with Viso Services.
  6. Install the new version of Viso Services.
  7. Insert the hardware key into the computer with Viso Services.
  8. Install the new version of Viso Recorder.
  9. Restore the connection between Viso Recorder and Viso Services and share the video file folder. You may receive an error that your license is not valid; this will be addressed in a later step.
  10. Install the new version of Viso Viewer.
  11. Restore all connections between Viso Viewer instances and Viso Services.
  12. You may need to upgrade your dongle with the Upgrade Key received from Noldus to continue working with your system.

Compatibility with Earlier Viso Versions

Sessions created in Viso 10.7 are upgraded to Viso 12 sessions. Once Viso 12 is installed, sessions cannot be opened in Viso 10.7, and Viso 12 sessions cannot be opened in Viso 10.7. When you upgrade from Viso 10.7, the Viso database is backed up automatically.

Upgrading from Viso 10.6 or Earlier

Aim: To upgrade Viso 10.6 or earlier to Viso 12.

Prerequisite: You have Viso 10.6 or an earlier version and are eligible to upgrade to version 12.

  1. Close all running Viso applications. Exit all running Viso Recorder Managers.
  2. Shut down the following services on the computer with Viso Services using Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services:
    • Viso Web Server or Viso Web Service (if present)
    • Viso Reverse Proxy (if present)
    • Viso Diagnostics Services
    • Viso Services
    • RabbitMQ (part of the N-Linx server)
  3. Make a backup of the files VisoDatabase.mdf and VisoDatabase_log.ldf located in the folder C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Noldus\Viso\.
  4. Remove the hardware key from the computer with Viso Services.
  5. Open Windows Programs and Features and uninstall the following components in exactly this order. After removing each component, restart the computer and verify that everything was removed correctly. If multiple components are installed on the same computer, close them down again after restarting before continuing.
    • From Viso Viewer computers: Viso Viewer
    • From the Viso Recorder computer: Viso Recorder
    • From the Viso Services computer: Viso Services, then N-Linx Server or RabbitMQ (whichever is present)
  6. Install the new version of Viso Services. Note: If Erlang is already installed, do not remove it. Install Viso components in the following order.

Sessions created in Viso 10.6 or earlier are upgraded to Viso 12 sessions. Once Viso 12 is installed, sessions cannot be opened in Viso 10.6, and Viso 12 sessions cannot be opened in Viso 10.6.

Activating Your Viso License

A license for Viso comes with an activation key. The key determines which license options are available to you. If your license is not active and you try to use Viso, a message will appear prompting you to provide your activation key.

Aim: To activate your Viso license with your activation key.

Prerequisites:

  • You have installed your Viso components and have an activation key.
  • You have a functional internet connection on the computer where you wish to activate your license.
  1. Log in using your Setup account.
  2. Select the option Activate Software License Key.
  3. Click OK.

Note: The internet connection is only necessary for the activation of your license. Once the license is activated, Viso will also run offline.

Deactivating Your Viso License

If you uninstall Viso Services, your Viso license will be automatically deactivated. However, you may need to deactivate your license for other reasons: if you format the hard drive of the computer where Viso Services is installed, reinstall Windows on that computer, or wish to replace the computer with a new one, you must deactivate your Viso license first so that you can run Viso under the new circumstances.

Aim: To deactivate your Viso license.

Prerequisites:

  • You have installed Viso Services and activated your license.
  • You have a functional internet connection on the computer where you wish to deactivate your license.
  1. Log in using your Setup account.
  1. From the Viso Setup menu, select Deactivate.
  2. A message will appear, confirming deactivation.

Note: For the deactivation of your license, the computer must have a functional internet connection.
