Network Switch Settings

The Steps To Set Up The Network Switch

Which Situation Applies To You?

If Noldus IT installed your Viso system, the network switch has been set up. You can create users, locations and start recording sessions.

Instead of the term switch, the term router is often used in communication. Technically, the term switch is correct. A router typically has all the functionality of a switch plus more functions.

If Noldus IT installed the system but you encounter a problem with the video streams, check all the settings in this chapter.

If you bought the switch yourself, carry out the procedure below.

Prerequisites

  • You have a Netgear GS728TP, or, dependent on your setup, another switch or a successor of the Netgear GS728TP.
  • All computers in the Viso network are set up following the procedures in Computer Setup.
  • The computer with which you configure the switch has a fixed IP address in the range of the default IP address of the switch. The default address of the switch is 192.168.0.239. See Give Computers a Fixed IP Address.
  • The network allows data transfer of at least 1 Gb per second.
  • The cables must be suitable for Gigabit Ethernet. The minimum cable quality is CAT5e; CAT6 is recommended.
  • We recommend using a dedicated network for the entire Viso system with the cameras.
  • All cameras and computers are connected to the switch and all devices are powered. See Connections.

Procedure

  1. Check whether the switch has the most recent software version.
  2. Load settings for the switch.
  3. Check these settings.

Check Switch Firmware Version

The aim of this procedure is to check if the latest version of the software inside the switch is installed.

Procedure

  1. Make sure that the switch is physically connected to the computer and that the network is connected to the internet using a router.
  2. Type the IP address 192.168.0.239 in the address field of a web browser like Google Chrome. This will open the user interface of the switch.
  3. Enter the password. If you bought the switch from Noldus IT, the password is Noldus.
  4. In the System tab, click System Information. Note the version number under Software Version.
  5. Open the website netgear.com and click Support.
  6. Enter GS728TP in the Enter Your Model Number Or Product Name Here field.
  7. Click Downloads.
  8. The latest firmware version is shown under Current Versions. Download it if it is newer than your current version.

To Install A Newer Firmware Version

  1. Extract the downloaded zip file.
  2. Open the tab Maintenance and the subtab Download.
  3. On the left of your window, click HTTP File Download.
  4. Browse to the downloaded file and click Apply.
  5. After the new firmware is installed, open the subtab File Management and click Dual Image Status on the left of your window. The current version is shown under Image1 Ver and the downloaded version under Image2 Ver.
  6. Click Dual Image Configuration on the left of your window. Select image2 in the Image Name field and click Apply.
  7. Click Dual Image Status on the left of your window and check that the correct firmware version is now specified under Image1.
  8. Open the subtab Reset and click Device Reboot on the left of the window. Select the checkbox Check This Box And Click Apply Below To Reboot Unit(s). Click Apply. The switch will now restart with the new firmware.

Load Predefined Settings

The aim of this procedure is to load predefined settings for the network switch.

Procedure

  1. Download the Config file Netgear GS728TP.txt configuration file via your MyNoldus account: click on Downloads and then Drivers & Tools. Browse to my.noldus.com if you do not have a MyNoldus account yet.
  2. Open the switch in a browser by entering the IP address 192.168.0.239 in the address field. Enter the password. If you bought the switch from Noldus IT, the password is Noldus.
  3. Open the tab Maintenance and the subtab Download.
  4. Click HTTP File Download.
  5. From the File Type list, select Text Configuration.
  6. Select the file and click Apply. A warning message appears stating that this will reset the device. Click OK.

Note: If you do not have this file, you have to enter the settings manually. See Check The Settings for the required settings.
