Exporting raw footprint images from CatWalk XT – available options and limitations
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
Users want to export the original illuminated footprint images as standalone image files directly from CatWalk XT for use in presentations or publications, but cannot find a direct export option.
Details
CatWalk XT does not provide a dedicated export function for raw footprint images as individual image files. Requests typically arise when researchers want to show representative paw print images. Affects CatWalk XT 10.6 and 10.7.
Solution
CatWalk XT does not offer a direct 'Export footprint image' function. The following built-in options are available as alternatives:
1. **View Run Visualizations:** Navigate to **Analyze > View Run Visualizations** to display 2D Footprint Intensity maps, 3D Footprint Intensity, and Footfall Pattern visualizations on screen.
2. **Export Run Visualizations as video:** Use **File > Export > Run Visualizations** to export these visualization views as video files.
3. **Export the run video:** Use **File > Export > Run Video** to export the raw acquisition video for the active run, which contains the illuminated walkway footage.
4. **Export run data:** Use **File > Export > Run Data** to export numerical parameters.
5. **Screen capture workaround:** For individual footprint images, display the desired view on screen (e.g., Classify Runs print view or the 2D intensity map) and use a screen capture tool (Windows Snipping Tool, PrtSc) to save the image for use in figures.
6. There is no planned direct raw-image export in current versions; submit a feature request to Noldus if this capability is important for your workflow.
