USB license key lost or damaged – replacing with software-based license activation
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
The CatWalk XT USB hardware license (dongle) key has been lost, stolen, or damaged, preventing the software from launching because it cannot find a valid license.
Details
CatWalk XT traditionally uses a USB dongle for license validation. If the dongle is lost or broken, the software will not open. Noldus can replace the hardware license with a software-based activation code as an alternative. Affects any CatWalk XT installation using USB dongle licensing.
Solution
1. **Report the lost/damaged USB key to Noldus support** as soon as possible, providing your system serial number and proof of purchase or service contract details.
2. Noldus support will deactivate the lost hardware license on their end to prevent unauthorized use.
3. **A software-based license activation code** can be issued as a replacement, eliminating the need for a physical dongle going forward.
4. Follow the activation instructions provided by Noldus support to enter the software activation code within CatWalk XT (typically via Help > License or a license manager utility).
5. After activation, verify that CatWalk XT launches correctly and that all licensed modules (e.g., IFM) are available.
6. To prevent future issues, consider noting the dongle serial number and storing it securely, or request software-based licensing proactively.
