EthoVision XT License Issues Affecting DanioVision Operation (Dongle vs. Software License)
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
EthoVision XT does not function correctly or causes confusion when switching between a software-based license and a hardware dongle (USB key), particularly when the dongle contains unexpected modules such as GLP.
Details
Users experience software license conflicts after swapping between a software license and a hardware dongle. The presence of the GLP module on a dongle can create additional login/permission confusion. Non-admin users may be unable to run EthoVision XT under these conditions. Reported with EthoVision XT 16.
Solution
1. Determine which license type is in use: software-based license or USB hardware dongle.
2. If using a hardware dongle, check which modules are included by navigating to Help > About in EthoVision XT.
3. If the GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) module is present on the dongle but not required, be aware it enforces additional user/admin controls. Non-admin users do not need the GLP module to run standard EthoVision XT experiments.
4. For non-admin users: ensure they log into EthoVision XT with a standard user profile; GLP module restrictions should not block normal operation.
5. If a software license and a dongle are both present simultaneously, remove the dongle to avoid conflicts and rely on one license type only.
6. Contact Noldus Support if modules on the license do not match your purchased configuration, so that the correct license file or dongle can be issued.
