Problem

A DanioVision monitoring session set for a defined duration (e.g., 1 hour) automatically stops before the scheduled end time.

Details

Symptoms: The recording terminates early (e.g., at 39 minutes of a 60-minute session) without user intervention. The user suspects a recurring hard drive issue; a similar early-stop event occurred previously and was temporarily resolved by system reinstallation and disk defragmentation. The root cause was not definitively confirmed at ticket closure. Affects DanioVision systems running EthoVision XT on the supplied PC.

Solution

1. Check available disk space on the recording drive: EthoVision XT will stop recording if the drive runs out of space. Free up space or redirect recordings to a larger drive if needed.
2. Run a disk health check (e.g., Windows CHKDSK or a manufacturer's diagnostic tool) to identify bad sectors or file system errors on the recording drive.
3. Defragment the hard drive (if it is a traditional HDD, not an SSD) to improve write performance.
4. Check the Windows Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) for disk errors or application crashes at the time the recording stopped — look under Windows Logs → Application and System.
5. Ensure the PC meets the minimum hardware specifications for the version of EthoVision XT installed and that no background processes are competing for disk I/O during recording.
6. If the drive is failing, replace it. Note that the Dell PC supplied with DanioVision systems purchased in 2022 may be out of manufacturer warranty — check Dell Support with the service tag before proceeding.
7. If the problem persists after addressing disk issues, contact Noldus support with the EthoVision XT log files and Windows Event Viewer export for further investigation.
