EthoVision XT Data Import into EthoAnalysis Fails or Produces Errors

Last updated: Oct 29, 2026

Problem

Users experience data compatibility issues when importing EthoVision XT tracking data into EthoAnalysis, resulting in import failures or incorrect analysis output.

Details

Symptoms include EthoAnalysis becoming confused or failing on one or more analysis tabs after import. This has been observed in ant foraging / EntoLab experiment setups using EthoVision XT integrated with EthoAnalysis. The issue is linked to exporting more data variables than EthoAnalysis expects. The last analysis tab may fail, potentially also due to insufficient detection data (e.g., many zero-detection trials).

Solution

1. In EthoVision XT, open the analysis profile used for export.
2. Restrict the exported variables to only the following: Velocity, Distance Moved, and In Zone information.
3. Remove any additional variables from the export profile.
4. Re-export the data from EthoVision XT using this restricted profile.
5. Re-import the exported file into EthoAnalysis.
6. Verify that the behaviour statistics table populates correctly across all analysis tabs.
7. If the last analysis tab still fails, check whether sufficient detection data exists for all trials — tabs may fail when a large proportion of trials have zero detections.
