Analyzing Data in Time Bins (e.g., 1-Minute Intervals) in EthoVision XT
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A user wants to analyze tracking data in fixed time intervals (e.g., 1-minute bins) after trials have already been recorded, rather than viewing the entire trial as a single period.
Details
EthoVision XT supports time-binned analysis through the Data Profile result settings. This is applicable to any parameter (distance moved, zone occupancy, velocity, etc.) and any trial type. Also commonly asked in conjunction with: whether manual scoring results replace or supplement automatic tracking results.
Solution
1. Open EthoVision XT and load your experiment.
2. Go to Analysis > Data Profile (or the Data Profile selector in Statistics & Charts).
3. Create a new Data Profile or edit an existing one.
4. Click the 'Settings' button on the relevant Result row.
5. In the Result Settings window, select 'Result per time interval' (or similar option).
6. Set the interval duration to 60 seconds (1 minute).
7. Save the Data Profile.
8. Go to Statistics & Charts, select the updated Data Profile, and click 'Calculate'.
9. The output will now show values broken into 1-minute bins for each trial.
Regarding manual scoring and automatic tracking:
- Manual scoring data (behavioral states scored in the Manual Scoring module) is stored separately from automatic tracking data (position, velocity, zone entries).
- Manual scores do not replace automatic tracking results; both types of data coexist in the experiment and can be exported independently or combined in a data profile.
