Analyzing IR (Infrared) Camera Videos in EthoVision XT – Workflow Optimization for Large Batches

Last updated: Nov 01, 2026

Problem

Users who have acquired large numbers of behavioral videos using IR cameras want guidance on optimizing the EthoVision XT analysis workflow to avoid manual, time-consuming processing of each video individually.

Details

IR camera recordings are commonly used in behavioral neuroscience for low-light or dark-phase recording. EthoVision XT can analyze IR videos using standard tracking methods, but when hundreds of videos are involved, manual processing of each trial is impractical. Workflow optimization typically involves: batch trial import, applying consistent arena and detection settings across trials, using trial templates to replicate settings, and exporting analysis results in bulk. Remote support or training sessions are often the most effective way to optimize a complex IR video analysis workflow. Relevant for users with large IR video datasets across EthoVision XT versions.

Solution

1. **Batch import videos:** In EthoVision XT, use File > Import Trials to add multiple video files at once rather than adding them one by one.
2. **Apply settings from a template trial:** Set up one trial with correct arena, calibration, detection settings (including appropriate threshold for IR video contrast), and tracking settings. Then copy these settings to all other trials using the 'Copy Settings to All Trials' function.
3. **Use consistent naming and grouping:** Organize trials into groups (e.g., by animal ID, treatment, day) during import to simplify later analysis and filtering.
4. **Batch track:** After configuring all trials, use the batch tracking function to run automated tracking on all trials sequentially without manual intervention for each.
5. **Create a reusable Analysis Profile:** Define your analysis parameters (zones, parameters of interest, data profile) once and apply it to all trials during export.
6. **Batch export:** Use the Analysis > Export Statistics function to export results from all trials at once to Excel or CSV.
7. **Review a sample:** After batch tracking, review a random sample of tracked trials to verify detection quality, adjusting thresholds if needed before exporting final results.
8. If your workflow is complex or you have specific questions about IR video analysis settings, contact Noldus support to schedule a remote consultation session.
