Analyzing Social Contact and Conditional Stopping Behavior in EthoVision XT – Multi-Condition Measures, Approach/Leaving
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A researcher wants to analyze whether contact with a non-moving conspecific increases the probability that an active animal stops (e.g., snail aggregation behavior). They need to know whether EthoVision can quantify conditional behavioral probabilities based on zone contact or proximity events.
Details
This is a complex analysis use case: the user wants to determine if the likelihood of a subject stopping increases upon encountering a stationary conspecific. Standard single-measure outputs do not directly provide this conditional probability. EthoVision XT has relevant built-in measures (Approach, Leaving) and supports multi-condition dependent measures in the Analysis Profile. The JavaScript output module in EthoVision can be used for more advanced custom calculations. Applicable to any multi-animal or social interaction paradigm requiring conditional behavioral analysis.
Solution
1. EthoVision XT does not provide a direct 'conditional probability of stopping' readout, but the analysis is achievable with the right combination of tools.
2. Use the Analysis Profile to configure multi-condition dependent measures: define a condition for when the subject is in proximity to or in contact with the stationary conspecific, and measure movement/velocity parameters within that condition window.
3. Explore the built-in 'Approach' and 'Leaving' measures in the Analysis Profile, which can quantify events and durations associated with subjects approaching or departing from a zone or point of interest (e.g., the location of the stationary animal).
4. For more advanced conditional probability calculations (e.g., probability of stopping given contact vs. no contact), use the JavaScript output module in EthoVision XT to write custom scripts that compute derived statistics from the raw tracking data.
5. If you are unfamiliar with the JavaScript module or multi-condition analysis setup, contact Noldus support or consult the EthoVision XT manual for the Analysis Profile chapter. A Noldus scientific consultant may also be able to assist with study design.
