Mini USB I/O Box Not Detected by Computer – Hardware Fault and Replacement
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
The Noldus Mini USB I/O Box, used to generate TTL signals for behavioral experiments, suddenly stops working and is no longer detected by the computer, even after testing on multiple USB ports and computers.
Details
The Mini USB I/O Box may fail due to an internal hardware fault (e.g., failed USB controller). The failure can be sudden with no preceding software changes. The device is not detected in Device Manager and produces no TTL output. Troubleshooting across multiple PCs and USB ports rules out a host-side cause.
Solution
1. **Basic troubleshooting first**:
- Test the I/O Box on at least two different USB ports (preferably on the rear I/O panel of the PC, which uses the motherboard USB controller rather than a front-panel header).
- Test on a different computer entirely to rule out a PC-specific USB driver issue.
- Try a different USB cable.
- Check Device Manager for the device with and without the I/O Box connected — a new unknown device or error device may appear if the controller is partially functional.
2. **If the device is not detected on any computer**: The I/O Box has likely suffered a hardware failure (e.g., internal USB controller failure).
3. **Contact Noldus technical support** and report the hardware fault. Provide:
- The serial number of the I/O Box (found on the device label).
- A description of troubleshooting steps already performed.
- Proof of purchase or support contract details.
4. Noldus will initiate an **RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization)** process. Ship the unit to Noldus for inspection and repair or replacement.
5. While awaiting repair/replacement, consult with Noldus support about any temporary workarounds for your TTL triggering needs.
