Basler GigE Camera Not Detected in EthoVision – DirectShow Driver Not Installed or Wrong Pylon Version
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A Basler GigE camera is visible and functioning in Pylon Viewer but does not appear in EthoVision's hardware configuration or camera source selection.
Details
EthoVision uses DirectShow to interface with cameras. If the DirectShow filter/driver was not included during Pylon Viewer installation (it must be selected during custom installation), the camera will appear in Pylon Viewer but not in EthoVision. Additionally, installing an incorrect or incompatible version of Pylon can also prevent detection in EthoVision. Affects EthoVision XT 18 and other versions using Basler GigE cameras. This article covers the Pylon configuration aspect specifically (DirectShow driver and version), complementing the existing articles on GigE camera detection and IP configuration.
Solution
1. Open Add or Remove Programs and search for 'Pylon'.
2. Select the Pylon entry and click Modify.
3. Choose Custom installation, scroll through the component list, and ensure the DirectShow driver/filter component is checked for installation.
4. Complete the modification and restart the PC.
5. If the wrong version of Pylon was installed, uninstall it completely, then download and install the correct version of Pylon that is compatible with your EthoVision version from the Basler website or as provided by Noldus.
6. After installation, launch EthoVision and check the hardware configuration to confirm the camera now appears as an available source.
7. If the camera still does not appear, verify the camera's IP address is on the same subnet as the dedicated GigE network card (e.g., 192.168.200.x) and that the network card has a static IP configured.
