Connecting USB I/O Box (PTIO-0020) to Third-Party Devices – Cable and Adapter Options for BNC/RJ45

Last updated: Oct 29, 2026

Problem

Users want to connect the Noldus USB I/O Box (PTIO-0020) to a third-party device (e.g., Arduino, stimulator) that requires a BNC input, but are unsure what cable or adapter to use to bridge the RJ45 port on the I/O box to a BNC connector.

Details

The Noldus Mini USB I/O Box uses RJ45 connectors for its digital I/O ports. Many external laboratory devices (e.g., Arduino, laser drivers, stimulators used in optogenetics) use BNC connectors for TTL input/output. Standard off-the-shelf cables do not connect these two connector types directly. Affects users setting up custom hardware integrations, particularly for optogenetics or third-party behavioral hardware.

Solution

1. There is no standard off-the-shelf cable that directly connects RJ45 (I/O box) to BNC (third-party device). Two practical options are available:

Option A – Custom RJ45-to-BNC cable:
- Build or commission a custom cable that terminates in an RJ45 plug on one end (wired to the correct pin on the I/O box port) and a BNC connector on the other.
- Consult the Noldus USB I/O Box pinout diagram (available in the hardware documentation or from Noldus Support) to identify the correct signal and ground pins for the port you are using.
- Ensure the cable carries the correct TTL voltage level compatible with your third-party device.

Option B – Noldus Opto-Isolator package:
- Noldus offers an opto-isolator accessory designed to interface the I/O box with external devices safely, including those requiring BNC connections.
- Contact your Noldus regional sales representative or Noldus Support to inquire about the opto-isolator package and confirm compatibility with your specific third-party device.

2. When using the I/O box for optogenetics, also refer to: 'Dual-Channel (Two-Zone) Optogenetic Stimulation Triggered via TTL Output in EthoVision XT' and 'Triggering Optogenetic Stimulation from EthoVision XT Using Trial & Hardware Control' for software configuration guidance.
