EthoVision License Activation – Key Shows as Active on Wrong PC or in Wrong Mode
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A user opens EthoVision and finds it is running in 'Analysis-only Mode' when they need full acquisition access, or the license appears linked to a different/old PC and cannot be activated on the intended machine. Users may also be unsure how to switch from analysis mode back to full licensed mode.
Details
This occurs when: (1) The user selected 'Open in analysis mode' at launch (perhaps because the activation key was not immediately available). (2) The license was activated under a previous computer name or installation and the activation record persists. (3) The license is a floating license and all seats are in use.
Solution
**To exit Analysis-only Mode and activate with a license key:**
1. Open EthoVision.
2. Go to **Help > Deactivate License**. The window should display 'Deactivate Analysis Mode'. Click **Continue**. EthoVision will close.
3. Restart EthoVision. You will be prompted to activate with a license key.
4. Enter your activation key and select the appropriate license type (Floating or Fixed).
**If the license server shows no active uses but the key still fails:**
1. Navigate to **C:\ProgramData\EthoVision XT** and delete all **.txt** files (enable hidden items in File Explorer if needed).
2. Restart EthoVision and re-enter the activation key.
**For floating licenses:**
Ensure the PC has internet access. Floating licenses check the license server each time EthoVision is opened. If all seats are occupied, wait for another user to close EthoVision or contact support to review active sessions.
