Floating License Seat In Use – Restarting EthoVision to Release Stuck Seat
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A user cannot launch EthoVision because all floating license seats are reported as in use, even though no one appears to be actively running the software.
Details
When using a floating (network) SBLK license with a limited number of seats, a seat can become stuck as 'in use' if EthoVision was not closed cleanly (e.g., crash, forced shutdown) or if the license server database has not yet released the session. The user receives an error indicating all seats are occupied. Affected versions include EthoVision XT 18 and 19.
Solution
1. Confirm that all other users or computers that may have EthoVision open have fully closed the application.
2. On the affected PC, close and fully restart EthoVision (exit completely and relaunch).
3. If the seat remains stuck, restart EthoVision multiple times — the license server database may take a few cycles to update the permission state.
4. If the problem persists, contact Noldus support to have the stuck seat manually released via the license portal.
5. To prevent recurrence, always close EthoVision cleanly rather than terminating via Task Manager.
