Floating License Stuck Active on Old/Inaccessible PC – Cannot Activate Elsewhere
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A floating EthoVision license appears to be consumed by a PC that is no longer accessible, or a teammate activated the license and did not deactivate it, leaving no seats available for other users.
Details
Floating licenses check in/out of a license server when EthoVision is opened and closed. If someone leaves EthoVision open, closes without deactivating, or if the PC crashes, the seat may remain checked out. This blocks other users from activating the software.
Solution
1. First, check whether anyone on your team currently has EthoVision open on another PC and ask them to close it normally.
2. If the seat is stuck, visit the Noldus license portal (provided by support) to remotely deactivate the license, or contact Noldus support to force-deactivate the specific seat on the server.
3. Once released, activate EthoVision on the desired PC.
4. **Best practice:** Always close EthoVision normally when finished to release the floating seat back to the pool.
