Preserving Original Tracking Data When Making Track Editor Modifications
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
Users who have interpolated missing data or made other corrections in the Track Editor are unsure how to preserve the original raw data while also saving a modified version, and encounter errors when attempting to save the experiment.
Details
EthoVision XT saves tracking data within the experiment file. Modifications made in the Track Editor (e.g., interpolating missing points, removing aberrant samples) overwrite the track data in the current experiment. Users who want to retain the original unmodified dataset alongside a corrected version need to use a deliberate save strategy. Save errors encountered during this workflow are often related to the experiment folder path or file permissions.
Solution
To preserve original data while saving a modified version:
1. Before making any Track Editor changes, go to File > Save As and save a duplicate copy of the experiment under a new name (e.g., 'Experiment_interpolated').
2. Make all Track Editor modifications (interpolation, point removal, etc.) in the duplicate file only.
3. Keep the original experiment file untouched as your raw data backup.
If you encounter a save error:
1. Check that the experiment folder path is accessible and that you have write permissions to that directory.
2. Ensure the folder path does not contain special characters or is not located on a network drive that has become disconnected.
3. Try saving to a local drive (e.g., C:\Users\...) if a network location is causing issues.
4. Refer to the MyNoldus knowledge base article on save errors for additional folder-related troubleshooting: https://my.noldus.com/app/resources/book/mynoldus-knowledge-base/chapter/related-to-ethov...
