How to calculate behavioral code frequencies in Observer XT
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
Users want to calculate how often each behavioral code occurs (frequency counts) across their observations but are unsure where to find this in Observer XT.
Details
Applies to Observer XT 17 and similar versions. Frequency data is derived from the Event Log during the Analyze phase. Both state events (counted by onset) and point events (counted per occurrence) can be included. Users new to the analysis workflow may not locate the correct menu path.
Solution
1. Open the project in Observer XT and ensure the observations you want to analyze are available.
2. Go to the **Analyze** menu and select the observations to include in your analysis.
3. Create or select a **Data Profile** that covers the time range and subjects/behaviors of interest. If you want all data, a default or all-inclusive profile can be used.
4. In the analysis results configuration, select **Frequency** as one of the statistics to calculate. Observer XT will count the number of times each behavior onset occurs for state events, and each occurrence for point events.
5. Run the analysis. Results will appear in the Results panel, organized by subject and behavior code.
6. To export: right-click the results table or use File > Export to save the frequency data to Excel or a delimited text file for further analysis.
