Observer XT license: difference between Coder (OC) and main (full) license — Coder cannot modify coding scheme
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A user is unable to unlock behaviors or add new behaviors to their coding scheme in Observer XT. The option to edit the coding scheme is unavailable or greyed out.
Details
Observer XT offers two license tiers: a full (main/master) license and a Coder (OC) license. The Coder license is designed for data collection only and does not permit editing or unlocking the coding scheme, adding behaviors, or modifying project settings. Users who share a lab may inadvertently activate the Coder license instead of the main license, especially when both are available as USB dongles.
Solution
1. In Observer XT, go to Help > License Info to confirm which license type is currently active.
2. If it shows a Coder (OC) license and you need to edit the coding scheme, you must switch to the main (full) Observer XT license.
3. If using a USB dongle, check the physical dongle plugged in — the license type may be printed on the dongle. Swap to the dongle carrying the main license.
4. If using software-based licenses, deactivate the Coder license (Help > License > Deactivate) and activate the main license key instead.
5. Once the main license is active, you will be able to unlock and modify behaviors in your coding scheme.
