Coding scheme errors prevent observation from starting in Observer XT

Last updated: Oct 29, 2026

Problem

When attempting to start an observation in Observer XT, the software displays an error indicating the coding scheme contains errors and the observation cannot begin.

Details

Affects Observer XT 17. The error means one or more subjects, behaviours, or modifiers in the coding scheme are configured incorrectly or incompletely. The observation will not start until all errors are resolved.

Solution

1. Open the **coding scheme** for editing (do not start the observation).
2. Click **Check** (the built-in coding scheme checker).
3. Review the list of errors displayed. Select each error — Observer XT will navigate to the relevant subject, behaviour, or modifier.
4. Correct the identified problem (e.g., missing required field, invalid configuration).
5. Click **Check** again after each correction.
6. Continue until the checker reports no errors.
7. Close the checker and attempt to **Start Observation** again.
