Observer XT project file structure corruption: error messages and inability to start observations
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
Users receive error messages when attempting to start or open observations in Observer XT, and are unable to proceed with coding. The project appears to open but coding cannot begin.
Details
The errors are caused by an incomplete or corrupted project file structure — for example, missing subfolders, broken links within the project, or a project that was set up incorrectly (e.g., copied partially, or created without following the correct setup procedure). This can occur after a project is moved, backed up incorrectly, or when a user attempts to reuse a project template without proper setup. Observed in conjunction with OC SBLK licenses and student/co-user accounts.
Solution
1. Do not attempt to repair the corrupted project by editing files manually.
2. Identify a working, complete Observer XT project from the same installation as a reference.
3. In Observer XT, use the working project as a template: open it, review its folder structure and coding scheme, and create a new project based on it.
4. Re-import your videos and coding scheme into the new project.
5. If you have scored observation data in the broken project that you need to recover, contact Noldus support before making changes — they may be able to extract the event data.
6. To prevent recurrence, always create new projects using Observer XT's built-in 'New Project' wizard rather than copying or renaming project folders manually.
7. Noldus recommends scheduling a training session to ensure correct project setup and coding workflow, especially for new users.
