Observer XT storage: understanding where project and video files are stored and monitoring disk space

Last updated: Nov 01, 2026

Problem

Users are unsure how to check available storage within their Noldus system and want to know where Observer XT stores video files and project data, particularly when cameras stop recording due to insufficient space.

Details

Observer XT does not manage its own separate storage quota. Video files and project data are stored on the local PC's hard drive (typically the C:\ drive by default, though this can be configured). Observer XT stores only a file path reference (link) to each video file — it does not copy videos into the project folder. Storage problems (cameras stopping mid-recording) are therefore a function of available disk space on the PC or the designated recording drive.

Solution

1. Observer XT does not have a built-in storage meter. To check available disk space, open Windows File Explorer, right-click on the relevant drive (usually C:\), and select 'Properties' to see used and free space.
2. Video files are stored at the location configured in MediaRecorder or your recording software — check the recording destination path in those settings.
3. Observer XT project files (including event data) are stored in the project folder, which by default may also be on the C:\ drive. Large video files stored here will consume significant space.
4. Because Observer XT only links to video files rather than copying them, you can store video files on a secondary drive (D:\, external drive, NAS) to free up space on C:\. Ensure the file path remains accessible from the Observer XT workstation.
5. Regularly archive or delete video files that have been backed up elsewhere to maintain sufficient free disk space for ongoing recordings.
6. Consider configuring your recording software to save directly to a high-capacity secondary drive.
