Pocket Observer requires Observer XT running on a computer; USB or software license applies to both
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
Users attempting to use Pocket Observer (the mobile companion app) are prompted for a physical USB license key they do not have, and are unsure how licensing works between Pocket Observer and the main Observer XT application.
Details
Pocket Observer is the mobile/tablet companion to Observer XT and requires that the main Observer XT application be running on a computer or laptop on the same network. Pocket Observer itself does not run independently with its own license. If the main Observer XT license is software-based (SBLK activation code), the USB dongle is not required.
Solution
1. Pocket Observer cannot operate standalone — it requires the main Observer XT application to be installed and running on a computer or laptop on the same local network.
2. If your Observer XT license is software-based (you have an SBLK activation code), you do not need a physical USB dongle. Activate Observer XT on your computer using the software activation code via Help > License Manager.
3. Once Observer XT is running and licensed on the computer, launch Pocket Observer on your mobile device and connect it to the same network as the computer.
4. Follow the Pocket Observer Reference Manual for setup and ethogram transfer instructions.
5. If you are unsure whether your license is USB-based or software-based, contact Noldus Support with your license number to confirm.
