EthoVision XT Does Not Require Internet Access for Normal Operation
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A university IT department asks whether EthoVision requires a permanent internet connection to function, creating concern about network security policy compliance.
Details
Applies to EthoVision XT 19 (and earlier versions). Some institutions have strict policies about software that requires ongoing internet connectivity. There is also potential confusion between the internet requirement for software-based license (SBLK) activation and ongoing operational requirements.
Solution
1. EthoVision XT does not require an internet connection for day-to-day operation (acquisition, tracking, analysis, export).
2. Internet access simplifies the initial activation of a software-based license (SBLK): if internet access is available at activation time, the process is straightforward via the online activation portal.
3. If the computer running EthoVision has no internet access, offline activation is available for SBLK licenses. Contact Noldus Support for the offline activation procedure.
4. USB hardware dongle licenses do not require any internet access at any point—the dongle provides the license locally.
5. You can provide this confirmation in writing to IT: 'EthoVision XT 19 does not require an internet connection to operate after installation and license activation are complete.'
6. For IT documentation purposes, request the official system requirements and network policy information from Noldus Support, who can provide formal documentation suitable for institutional review.
