Statistics and Charts Calculation Fails or Stops Prematurely – Misconfigured Analysis or Data Profile
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
When attempting to calculate results in the Statistics and Charts section of EthoVision XT, the calculation either does not start, stops after a few seconds, or produces question marks instead of values.
Details
This can occur when: (1) An analysis profile or data profile references an independent variable, condition, or zone that has since been renamed or deleted. (2) The 'Calculate' button has not been clicked after selecting data profiles (question marks indicate uncalculated data). (3) The experiment file has been partially corrupted (e.g., after a hard drive failure or crash). Affects EthoVision XT across multiple versions.
Solution
1. If you see question marks in the Statistics & Analysis section, click the 'Calculate' button to populate the data table. This step is required after selecting or changing a data profile.
2. If calculation starts but stops prematurely, the analysis or data profile may be misconfigured:
a. Create a new, blank Analysis Profile and a new, blank Data Profile.
b. Select these new profiles in the Statistics & Charts view and attempt to calculate.
c. If calculation succeeds with new profiles, the original profiles are the problem — rebuild them, checking for references to renamed or deleted variables, zones, or conditions.
3. If the experiment file was recovered after a crash or hard drive failure and calculation still fails, the file may be partially damaged. In this case, re-tracking affected trials may be the only option.
4. Trials from a damaged file can be imported into a new experiment if the video files are still accessible.
