Trial Control Settings and Acquisition Options Not Visible or Unavailable After Installation
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
After opening a new experiment in EthoVision XT, the user cannot find the Trial Control Settings and is unable to record trials, even though the camera is working and the license appears active.
Details
Affects EthoVision XT 19 (and potentially other versions) after a fresh installation. Symptoms include missing Trial Control menu items, greyed-out acquisition buttons, and inability to add or run trials despite an active license with all modules showing as enabled. This may be caused by a corrupted or incomplete installation.
Solution
1. Verify that the license is fully active by opening Help > License Information and confirming that all expected modules are listed and enabled.
2. If the license is active but Trial Control and acquisition are still unavailable, perform a complete uninstall of EthoVision: go to Windows Settings > Apps, find EthoVision XT, and uninstall it.
3. After uninstalling, manually check that the EthoVision installation folder (typically C:\Program Files\Noldus\EthoVision XT) has been fully removed. Delete any remaining files if present.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Download a fresh installer from MyNoldus and perform a clean installation.
6. Launch EthoVision, reactivate the license if prompted, and open a new experiment to confirm that Trial Control and acquisition options are now accessible.
7. If the issue persists after a clean reinstall, contact Noldus Support and provide screenshots of the experiment view and license information screen.
