Switching an SBLK License Between Fixed (Computer-Locked) and Floating Modes
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
Users want to switch their software-based license (SBLK) from fixed/computer-locked mode to floating mode (or vice versa) so the license can be used flexibly across multiple computers.
Details
Applies to EthoVision XT SBLK licenses. Fixed mode ties the license to one specific PC. Floating mode allows the license to be checked out by any networked PC that has internet access. Users may need to switch modes when adding computers, changing workflows, or consolidating lab resources. Note: the floating license registry visible to administrators shows PC names, not FQDNs.
Solution
1. Review the EthoVision Help Manual section on License Activation (Help > EthoVision Help > License Activation) for the official step-by-step switching procedure.
2. To switch from fixed to floating:
a. On the currently activated PC, open EthoVision and go to Help > License > Deactivate (or use the Noldus License Manager) to release the fixed activation.
b. Contact Noldus Support or your sales representative to confirm the license has been converted to floating mode in the Noldus license server.
c. On each target PC, install EthoVision and activate using the floating license credentials; the PC must have internet access to check the license in/out.
3. To switch from floating to fixed (computer-locked/offline), refer to the separate KB article on converting online SBLK licenses to offline computer-locked mode.
4. For questions about which floating seats are currently in use, administrators can check the registry entry on the license server—note this displays PC names only, not full FQDNs.
5. Contact Noldus Support if the mode switch cannot be completed through the software interface.
