FaceReader Crashes or Fails to Load on Incompatible Hardware (AMD/Underpowered Laptops)
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
After installing FaceReader 10, the software either crashes immediately after opening, fails to load analysis models, or becomes completely unresponsive. The issue persists regardless of reinstallation and occurs on the user's primary laptop(s).
Details
This issue is distinct from GPU memory exhaustion. It occurs when the host machine's hardware (CPU, GPU, or chipset) is fundamentally incompatible with FaceReader's analysis engine — for example, certain AMD GPU/APU configurations or laptops that do not meet minimum specification requirements. The software may open to the project selection screen but crash before any project is loaded, or analysis models may fail to initialize entirely. Observed in FaceReader 10 on Windows laptops. Apple/macOS is not supported at all.
Solution
1. Review the PC diagnostic/crash report if available — a message indicating 'analysis models fail to load' points to a hardware incompatibility, not a software bug.
2. Compare the machine's specifications against the official FaceReader minimum hardware requirements (available in the Help manual and on MyNoldus).
3. If the hardware does not meet requirements (particularly regarding GPU type and VRAM), the software cannot be made to work on that machine through configuration alone.
4. Obtain a compatible Windows PC that meets or exceeds the listed specifications.
5. If you are uncertain whether the hardware is the cause, contact Noldus Support and provide a PC specification report for review before purchasing new hardware.
