Installing FaceReader on a Temporary or Secondary Computer Before Moving to a New Machine
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A user needs to install and use FaceReader on a temporary or older laptop while waiting for a new machine to arrive, and wants to know whether this is permitted and how to transfer the license afterward.
Details
Applies to FaceReader 10 with a Software-Based License Key (SBLK). The concern is whether running on a temporary machine will block activation on the intended primary machine later. This is a common scenario when new hardware is on order or during equipment replacement cycles.
Solution
1. FaceReader may be installed on as many computers as needed; installation itself does not consume a license activation.
2. Activation of the SBLK license is what locks usage to a specific machine. Activate FaceReader only on the computer you intend to use at any given time.
3. Before uninstalling FaceReader from the temporary/older laptop, deactivate the SBLK license on that machine first: open FaceReader, go to Help > License > Deactivate (or use the Noldus License Manager), and confirm deactivation.
4. Once deactivated, uninstall FaceReader from the old machine.
5. Install and activate FaceReader on the new laptop using the same license credentials from MyNoldus.
6. If deactivation on the old machine is not possible (e.g., machine is unavailable or damaged), contact Noldus Support for a remote deactivation/reset. Refer to the existing KB article 'FaceReader License Locked to Unknown or Old PC (Floating/Fixed Deactivation Required)' for that process.
