Renaming a FaceReader Project File (.frx) After Creation
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
A FaceReader project was saved with an incorrect name and the user needs to rename it. It is not clear whether renaming is supported within the software or how to do it without breaking the project.
Details
FaceReader does not expose a rename function prominently in the UI. However, the project file (.frx) can be renamed at the file system level. After renaming, the file may need to be moved or re-opened to be recognized correctly by the software. Observed in FaceReader 10; upgrading to the latest version is recommended for best compatibility.
Solution
1. Close FaceReader completely before making any file changes.
2. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder containing the FaceReader project file (.frx).
3. Rename the .frx file to the desired project name (right-click > Rename).
4. If FaceReader does not recognize the renamed file when using 'Open Existing Project', move the file to a different folder location, then browse to it from within FaceReader.
5. Upgrade to the latest version of FaceReader if not already done, as newer versions have improved project file handling.
6. Verify the project opens and all analysis data is intact after renaming.
