Basler GigE Camera Not Visible in MediaRecorder When Used with External PCIe Enclosure
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
MediaRecorder does not detect a Basler GigE camera connected through an external PCIe card enclosure (e.g., OWC Helios 5S via USB-C / Thunderbolt 4), even though Pylon (Basler's own software) can communicate with the camera.
Details
External PCIe enclosures used to connect PCIe frame grabber or PoE NIC cards to laptops are not officially supported by MediaRecorder. The camera may be visible in third-party tools (Pylon) but remain undetected in MediaRecorder.
Solution
External PCIe card holders are not supported in MediaRecorder. Use one of the following supported configurations instead:
1. **Laptop setup:** Use the laptop's native (built-in) Ethernet adapter for the camera network. Connect a PoE power injector between the switch/router and the camera to supply power, removing the need for a PCIe PoE card.
2. **Desktop/workstation setup (recommended for multi-camera):** Install the 2-port PoE network adapter directly into a dedicated workstation-class tower PC. This provides the most stable and fully supported configuration for Basler GigE cameras.
