Converting a Hardware Dongle License to a Software-Based License Key
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
A user needs to convert a physical USB dongle (hardware) license for MediaRecorder to a software-based (digital) license, for example when deploying on a portable lab or when the dongle is lost or impractical to use.
Details
Applies to MediaRecorder installations where the original license was issued as a USB hardware key. License conversion requires action on the Noldus account/license server side and cannot be performed by the end user alone.
Solution
1. Locate your current hardware license key number (printed on the dongle or available in your MyNoldus account).
2. Contact Noldus Support and request conversion from a hardware dongle license to a software-based license, providing your license number and reason for the request.
3. Support will deactivate the hardware license on the server and issue a new software activation key.
4. On the target computer, open MediaRecorder, go to Help > Activate License, and enter the new software key.
5. Complete online activation. Once confirmed, the USB dongle is no longer required and can be retired.
