Screens Go Black During Recording – NVIDIA Driver Mismatch (LeadTools)
Last updated: Oct 29, 2026
Problem
When the Record button is pressed in MediaRecorder, all camera preview screens go black. Recording appears to start but no image is captured. Previews return when recording is stopped. The issue may also present as general recording instability or application freezing.
Details
Caused by an incompatibility between LeadTools (the video processing library used by MediaRecorder and EthoVision XT) and newer NVIDIA graphics drivers. Affects MediaRecorder 6.x and EthoVision XT 15. Symptoms include black screens on record, application freezes, and camera feed instability. Issue appears after a graphics driver update.
Solution
1. Uninstall the current NVIDIA graphics driver.
2. Download and install the validated driver version 581.57 from: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/257329/
3. During installation, select 'Custom (Advanced)' and ensure a clean installation is performed.
4. Restart the computer after installation.
5. Launch MediaRecorder and verify camera previews remain active during recording.
6. If EthoVision XT is also affected and cameras are not visible after the rollback, open Windows display settings and change the Graphics preference for the EthoVision XT application from 'Power Saving' to 'High Performance'.
