Videos Recorded as Separate Files per Camera Instead of a Combined/PiP Output
Last updated: Nov 01, 2026
Problem
When recording with multiple cameras, each camera saves a separate video file even though the user expects a single combined recording.
Details
MediaRecorder can save each camera view as an individual file or combine them into a single file (side-by-side or picture-in-picture). The default or previously configured setting may result in separate files per camera, which can be unexpected when users have not explicitly configured output format. Affects all MediaRecorder versions with multi-camera setups.
Solution
1. Open MediaRecorder and navigate to the Video Settings menu.
2. Locate the output/layout option that controls how multiple camera feeds are saved (e.g., 'Separate files', 'Combined', or 'Picture-in-Picture').
3. Select the desired output format:
- Separate files: each camera produces its own file (current behavior).
- Combined: all feeds merged into one file side by side.
- Picture-in-Picture (PiP): one feed overlaid on another in a single file.
4. Save the settings.
5. Perform a test recording to confirm the output is in the expected format.
